Going affordable on a handset means the maker has to define its priorities right. You can’t have all the cutting edge features on it for a wallet-friendly price of €145 before taxes and subsidies. That’s the Nokia 5235 Comes With Music.

The Finland-based maker is positioning it as a music mobile phone of choice that has few peers at its price point when it comes to delivering a wonderful music listening and movie watching experience while on the road. Forget about getting a 3 megapixel autofocus camera. Don’t expect WiFi as well. And certainly no full GPS voiced turn-by-turn navigation. But for an entertainment handset, it’s one hell of a value.

It’s every inch the Nokia 5230, inside and out as well as price, except for the rubbery body edge molding. Instead, it sports a bluish chrome frame edge that gives that handset svelte iPhone-looking qualities. It also has unlimited access to the Nokia Comes With Music store for 12-18 months. That simply puts it above the 5230 in delivering great value for the money.

Strong Multimedia Features

Its remarkable entertainment features starts with media players that support more of the popular and even non-so popular audio, video and graphic file formats. Music playback gets a good 33 hours uninterrupted on its BL-5J lithium-in battery fully charged. It has sound enhancing features like Loudness boost, Bass Boost, Equalizer and Stereo Widening.

There is stereo FM with RDS receiver. While an internal memory of 320 MB won’t get you far, you get microSD support for up to 16 GB. Headphone listening gives you a choice of using its industry standard 3.5mm AV jack or using wireless Bluetooth A2DP stereo earphones

The 5235 carries a modest 2 megapixel fixed focus camera with 3x digital zoom. But you get a gorgeous 3.2 inch LCD TFT resistive touchscreen display with 360 x 640 resolution , 16 million colors and a 16:9 aspect ratio that makes movie watching a real pleasure.

VGA video recording is at 30fps. You get a gravity accelerometer for auto rotate, an ambient light sensor for auto-adjusting display brightness and a proximity sensor that disables touchscreen sensitivity in a call. A fully charged battery can give you up to 4.6 hours of video playback time and up to 3 hours in video call

Other Features

The new 5235 runs on the typical Symbian S60 5.0 OS with the 434 MHz ARM 11 processor. It’s a quad band GSM on 2G and UMTS on 3G with HSCSD/HSDPA data connectivity. You get Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR and micro USB support for local data transfers and synching. You get Mail for Exchange and Ovi Mail while internet browsing gets Flash Lite 3.0 support. There’s A-GPS and social networking with Facebook, MySpace, Ovi and YouTube is a breeze. Its battery brings you up to 7 hours of talk time and 18 days in standby both in GSM.

Verdict

It’s clear this is another winner for Nokia, upping the ante for full-featured price at this price point. The Nokia 5235 Comes With Music is a solid performer that delivers on its promise without the frills that make it cost more than it needs to be.
